Red Flag Rule

September 10th, 2008 - The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a regulation for ALL utilities to complete by November 1, 2008

This regulation, referred to as "The Red Flag Rule", requires water utilities to develop an Identity Theft Prevention Program to assist in the detection of potential identity theft and procedures for responding to and mitigating identity theft.

At SEMS Technologies, we have been working with the National Rural Water Association (NRWA) and the FTC to develop an automated tool designed specifically for water and wastewater utilities to handle this compliance. As you know, SEMS is a monthly subscription based software that constantly evolves to help ensure our customers stay in compliance as new regulations are introduced or existing regulations change. We are excited to tell you that we will be adding the "SEMS Red Flag Compliance" tool to the SEMS Software Suite in October.

If you would like more information regarding this rule, or would like to inquire about subscribing to the SEMS Software Suite, you may call us at 1-866-758-6582.

Rural Water Spearheads NIMS Guide for Small Systems

July 27th, 2007 - "The Texas Rural Water Association (TRWA), in partnership with FEMA's National Incident Management Center) Integration Center and SEMS Technologies developed The NIMS Implementation Guide for Small Drinking Water and Wastewater Utilities. NIMS is a comprehensive, national standard for preparedness and disaster recovery for all levels of government and critical public infrastructure. This guide identifies the components of the NIMS guidance and the Incident Command Structure that are particularly applicable to smaller water utilities when responding to a localized disaster, as well as the procedures to be implemented when responding to a large scale incident as part of a national response team.

In addition, SEMS Technologies is working with FEMA and TRWA on an effort to make this guide especially useful to small systems by integrating it into the SEMS Software Suite, and making it available to over 52,000 utilities during late 2007 and early 2008. The new software will automatically extract the relevant information from the utilities emergency response plan they developed using "SEMS - Security" and walk the user through a step-wise approach that educates them about the importance of understanding NIMS (including the standard terminology), implementing the system in the field during emergencies, and fully integrating their emergency response plan into the standardized management system."
